MY STAMP ON CHAURI CHAURA CENTENARY CELEBRATION

             SHEET OF CUSTOMIZED MY STAMP
BLOCK OF TWO CUSTOMIZED MY STAMP

The Chauri - Chaura incident occurred at Chauri-Chaura in the Gorakhpur district of the United Province (present day Uttar Pradesh), in British India on February 04,1922, when a large group of protesters, participating in the Non-Cooperation Movement, clashed with police, who opened fire. In retaliation the demonstrators attacked and set fire to a police station. Mahatma Gandhi, who was strictly against violence, halted the Non-Cooperation Movement at national level on February 12,1922 as a direct result of this incident. A lawsuit against 225 people was registered by the then British Government. Due to skilful defence by Mahamana Madan Mohan Malaviya and other scholar advocates, 206 people were acquitted in this case.

This movement was a huge movement by common farmers, labourers etc. The "Shaheed Smarak" located in Chauri-Chaura still reminds us of the movement and people gave up their lives for the independence of the country.

At the beginning of the centenary year of the Chauri Chaura Movement, this customized My Stamp has been released by the Department of Posts in collaboration with the Government of Uttar Pradesh.
