SPECIAL COVER ON GHANTA GHAR, GORAKHPUR, 12.02.2000
This Cave was built by Dacoit Angulimal about 600 B.C. Angulimal had lived in this Cave . After robbing the passengers he used to kill them and wear the garland of their fingers. Angulimal got Enlightenment from Lord Buddha and accepted Buddhism.
During the first war of Independence 1857, Shriner Kulbhushan Bhaiya Shiv GULAM SINGH of Rudhauli, at the call of the Moghul Emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar to check the entry of the British Army on the soil of Basti,wrote a letter to his Lieutenants asking them to move for Paida. He himself also moved towards Paida to fight the British Army but mistaking 'Paida' as 'Baida', his people reached 'Baida' instead of 'Paida'. He, however reached 'Paida' alone and waited there for his army-men. This information somehow reached the British Army and they surrounded him, compelling (him) for surrender. The great warrior Shiv Gulam Singh decided to fight instead of surrendering, and embraced martyrdom bravely fighting the British Army single-handedly. His prayer place, pond and well are still existent there.
The main architect of "Kakori Case", Shri Ram Prasad Bismil, was tried in court on September 6,1925, alongwith 34 other accused, for looting the Government Treasury of Kakori, near Lucknow, and other anti-Government activities. The Trial began in the court of Sessions Judge, Mr. Hamilton, under Section 121/A,120/B and 369 of I.P.C. under first two sections others were punished with 'Kalapani', and under Section 369, Shri Bismil was awarded Capital Punishment. The Judgment was changed on December 19,1927 in Gorakhpur Jail. His body was hanged at Urdu Bazar Chowk for three days, this Ghanta Ghar has been constructed.

The Shahid Sthal is situated on the Basti-Faizabad National Highway at Khankala, Chhawni, Dist.- Basti. At this place freedom fighters of Eastern U.P. fought the British Army under the leadership of Rani Talash Kumar. To defeat them the British Army hanged 150 freedom fighters alive from the branches of the present Peepal Tree and shot them. At the left side of this Sthal there is Grave of a British Ruler telling the story of their cruality. On this Sthal a fair is organised every year on "Shahid Ideas", January 30.

CANCELLATION : SHANTI GHANTA, SHRAWASTI
As a mark of "World Peace"this Shanti Ghanta was made of Asthadhatu in Japan in 1980 and brought to and kept at Shrawasti in 1981. The followers of Lord Buddha worship there. Lord Buddha stayed there 25 times and preached. The main feature of his preaching was promotion of peace and non-violence in the world. This "Shanti Ghanta"was placed there, with a view to promoting voice of peace which may be heard permanently. The weight of the Ghanta is 3.5 tonnes.
SPECIAL COVER ON ENVIRONMENTAL POLLUTION, 14.02.2000
Environmental pollution is a burning problem of today for the whole world. In India, pollution has grown with Industrial and social development. With a view to cautioning the people regarding environmental degradation, a special cover is being issued. It has been designed by Ravi Kumar Yadav, a student of class XI, of Kendriya Vidyalya, Azamgarh, which was Judged the best in a 'Regional Level Drawing Competition" held on 29.11.1999.
